Homeless people are scattered across greater Houston, often in inconspicuous settings that arouse only passing attention: A man sleeps on a downtown sidewalk. A woman and child crouch in the shadows of an abandoned suburban strip center.\u00a0 Tent cities pop up under freeway overpasses.\u00a0\u00a0You’ve likely noticed it on your commute to work and even on the edges of your neighborhood. Encampments of tents, cardboard boxes, and strewn sleeping bags can be seen under freeways, in parks, and sometimes steps away from residential properties.<\/p>\n
The annual count of homeless people in Harris and Fort Bend counties increased this year by 8 percent, to 3,866, after several years of steady declines. Since 2011, homelessness in greater Houston has been reduced by more than half. This year\u2019s increase was attributed to the destruction of housing by Hurricane Harvey\u2019s floods.\u00a0\u00a0Homelessness in the Houston area increased after Hurricane Harvey, according to this year’s annual Homeless Count and Survey released by the Coalition for the Homeless.<\/p>\n
According to the 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) more than 553,742 are homeless in the U.S.\u00a0 Approximately 17 of every 10,000 people were experiencing homelessness.\u00a0 Of those, approximately 65% were in emergency shelters or transitional housing.\u00a0 35% were in unsheltered locations.\u00a0 Overall, in the U.S., homelessness increased for the first time in 7 years in 2016-2017.<\/p>\n
In 2017 according to the HUD report, 369,081 were individuals who were homeless.\u00a0 184,661 were families with children, 40, 799 were unaccompanied youth, 40,056 were veterans and 86,962 were individuals with chronic patterns of homelessness.<\/p>\n
Half of all of those experiencing homelessness were in 5 states, California 134,278 at 25%, New York 89,503 at 16%, Florida 21,190 at 6%, Texas 23,548 at 4% and Washington 21,112 at 4%.\u00a0 Of all homeless, 47.1% were Caucasian, 40.6% were African American and 21.6% were Hispanic.<\/p>\n
In the U.S. 114, 829 of our homeless population is under the age of 18,\u00a0 53,438 are between the ages of 18-24 and those over 24 years of age\u00a0accounted for 385,475 and 40,056 were veterans.<\/p>\n
The City of Houston was nationally recognized by The White House and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as the largest city to effectively end veteran homelessness in 2015 and has served as a model for other cities looking to take an innovative and proactive approach to addressing homelessness. With nearly a 70% reduction in chronic homelessness and 50% reduction in overall homelessness, the city continues to invest in providing permanent supportive housing and to share information with other cities looking to replicate results and engage in meaningful change.<\/p>\n
