That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to brush every day, and also to get regular checkups and cleanings at the dentist\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>There are four basic steps to caring for teeth and gums:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"1\">\n<li>Brushing<\/li>\n<li>Flossing<\/li>\n<li>Rinsing<\/li>\n<li>Eating right<\/li>\n<li>Visiting the dentist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"1-3\">Brushing Your Teeth and Gums<\/h2>\n<p>Brush teeth and gums at least twice a day. If you can, brush 30 minutes to 1 hour after every meal. Brushing removes\u00a0plaque, a film of bacteria that clings to teeth. When bacteria in plaque come into contact with food, they produce acids. These acids lead to cavities.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-4\">Flossing Your Teeth<\/h2>\n<p>Floss your teeth once a day. Flossing gets rid of food and plaque between the teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach. If plaque stays between teeth, it can harden into\u00a0tartar, which must be removed by a dentist or hygienist.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rinsing Your Teeth &amp; Gums<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The third part of your daily oral care routine should be mouthwash &#8212; but not just any mouthwash.\u00a0Rinse daily with an antiseptic (also known as antibacterial) mouthwash to help kill bacteria that cause plaque, early\u00a0gum disease, and\u00a0bad breath.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"2-6\"><strong>Eating Right and Dental Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For good dental health, eat a variety of foods, avoiding those that contain sugars and starches. These foods produce the most acids in the mouth, and the longer they stay in the mouth, the more they can damage the teeth. Hard \u00absucking candies\u00bb are especially harmful because they stay in the mouth a long time. Snacking on sugary foods can lead to tooth decay, because most people don&#8217;t brush after snacks. Starchy snack foods, like potato chips, stick to the teeth.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-7\">Dental Check-Ups<\/h2>\n<p>Visit your dentist at least once every six months. To maintain healthy teeth and gums, it&#8217;s important to have regular check-ups and professional cleanings.
