\"Diabetes<\/p>\n

According to the <\/span>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a>, as of 2020, there are over 4.2 million Americans diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 88 million with pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition <\/span>characterized by slightly elevated blood glucose levels, indicating that a person is at risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. <\/span>Texas has one of the highest rates of diabetes, and <\/span>Harris county <\/span><\/a>is leading the state in diabetes diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy<\/span>. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) is an autoimmune response causing the body to attack the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of insulin<\/span>. <\/span>The vast majority of individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Symptoms of diabetes can include tiredness, frequent urination, blurry vision, unexplained weight loss, and thirst.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Avenue 360 has partnered with <\/span>Memorial Hermann<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>Houston Food Bank<\/span><\/a> to provide Diabetes Management Classes to patients. Patients attend a 6-week course to educate them on healthy lifestyle changes and how to manage their condition. Additionally, they receive a FoodRx card through the Houston Food Bank that provides 20 pounds of fresh produce twice a month.
