In Houston, pediatric COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations are increasing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/04\/health\/us-coronavirus-tuesday\/index.html\">especially in children under the age of 5<\/a>. Vaccines are designed to decrease the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are pediatricians seeing in sick children?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are seeing a bit of everything \u2013 cough\/cold symptoms; bronchiolitis and pneumonia; croup-like infections; vomiting or diarrhea; sore or itchy throats; headaches. Some will need hospitalization for lung, heart or other complications, especially children with underlying medical problems such as asthma and obesity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within 2-8 weeks after the initial infection, children can develop a rare complication called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fmis%2Fmis-c.html&amp;data=04%7C01%7Ccresendiz%40avenue360.org%7C3a285bc40bba4b76df3e08d9d1308e0f%7C118f1230b08a428f93ba83711680d991%7C0%7C0%7C637770828737511089%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&amp;sdata=4b6hldIVeiLKK9QNgSePyumyUxXleLmSuPgRLhAAnGM%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Symptoms include a combination of persistent fever, abdominal symptoms (pain, vomiting or diarrhea), rashes, and conjunctivitis. These patients can rapidly develop heart failure and other organ damage. Children who are critically ill will require care at a pediatric hospital.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children can develop persistent symptoms for weeks to months after COVID infection. Pediatricians most commonly see headaches, fatigue, decreased exercise tolerance, and chest pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommendations for parents as children return to school from winter break:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discuss the COVID vaccine with your child\u2019s pediatrician<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mask your child and yourself when out and about<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be thoughtful about your social activities over the next few weeks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Children benefit from familiar routines.
